Recent reports and research indicate that the U.S. is losing its status as a science and technology leader, with more than 75% of STEM workers believing that other nations, including China and India, have surpassed or will soon surpass the U.S. in these fields. The State of Science in America report from the non-partisan Science & Technology Action Committee surveyed 2000 U.S. STEM and education workers, highlighting concerns about the country's position in innovation and technology. Additionally, the disparity between the number of women graduating in STEM fields and their representation in the STEM workforce is evident in Canada, with about 60% of STEM grads being women but only making up 23% of the workforce. The implications of these findings on human capital and further development in developing and middle-income countries, such as Turkey and Vietnam, compared to the OECD, are also being discussed.
