Apple is expanding its research and development presence in China with two lab expansions. TSMC and Murata are investing up to $50 million and $30 million, respectively, in a fund managed by Climate Asset Management. Apple's suppliers are joining its green investment fund, increasing the total committed capital to $280 million. Apple is showcasing its efforts to restore a Brazilian rainforest and save over 3,000 types of trees from extinction. Despite decreasing supplier sites in China, Apple is increasingly relying on Chinese suppliers.
Oh look, Apple has been shifting supplier sites out of China (left) - what I tweeted previously But wait, look, Apple has also been relying on more Chinese suppliers over same years (right). This highlights the "made in China" and "made by Chinese firms" paradox https://t.co/XR4KvN9wyD
In short, even as Apple decreased its supplier sites IN China (left chart), it seems to have increased reliance on Chinese suppliers (right chart). https://t.co/Fs7GmUW9un
When I posted the 1st set of Apple supplier charts last wk, many quickly said "see, decoupling." But organizing the same dataset by "firm identity" shows just the opposite (2nd set). This is what I mean when I asked what we care about "made In China" or "made BY Chinese firms" https://t.co/O1ySc77Fuf
