The New Jersey Devils have facilitated the trade of Chris Tanev by retaining 50 percent of his cap hit, receiving a 2026 fourth-round pick in return. The Devils' involvement allowed the Colorado Avalanche to acquire a fourth-round pick by paying $1.25 million in cap space. On the other hand, the Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired Ilya Lyubushkin with 75 percent retained, sending a third-round pick to the Ducks and a sixth-round pick to the Hurricanes. This move provides the Leafs with more financial flexibility as Lyubushkin's cap hit to Toronto would be $687,500. The trade has sparked discussions among analysts and fans about the impact on the teams involved.
CORRECTION: The #Avs currently have $2,229,257 in LTIR relief available, per @CapFriendly. They could now add a player(s) who makes $8,917,028 or less with a 3-way deal/double salary retention like the Tanev/Lyubushkin trades w/o moving a player off the current roster.
The #Avs currently have $1,241,757 in LTIR relief available, per @CapFriendly. They could add a player who makes $4,967,028 or less with a 3-way deal/double salary retention like the Tanev/Lyubushkin trades w/o moving a player off the current roster.

From @7ElevenCanada That's Hockey - The cost to acquire Ilya Lyubushkin was two draft picks for the Leafs which has left their cupboard more bare. Should Toronto continue to use their picks to go all-in? More from @martybiron43: https://t.co/26vm1EyWFg #7ElevenThatsHockey https://t.co/XMSHtnQV5G

After getting Ilya Lyubushkin, I took a deep look into the #Leafs current cap situation, players like Jarnkrok on LTIR and such and what the Leafs can do to add more players between now and Mar 8 ⤵️ https://t.co/JHoJ0Nk3BW https://t.co/JHoJ0Nk3BW
We are officially one week away from the trade deadline & the #Canes so far have acquired a 2024 6th Round Pick from the #LeafsForever while taking on 25% of Ilya Lybushkin’s contract ($1.375M). They did give up the rights to forward Kirill Slepets who was drafted 152nd in 2019

It's not perfect, but it's what they got. And, boy, did they need to go get something. @lukefoxjukebox explains why the Maple Leafs re-acquired Ilya Lyubushkin. https://t.co/hFX2t5FtIX

Cranked out a quick piece on the Ilya Lyubushkin deal from the Ducks’ perspective. My thoughts on the deal along with who could potentially be on their way up I-5 from San Diego. #FlyTogether @TheHockeyNews https://t.co/ObotIZvVtp
Ilya Lyubushkin makes the Leafs worse. One of the least capable puck movers in the NHL. They’d be better off with any number of alternative lineups (six lefties, William Lagesson, Conor Timmins, you name it).
The Maple Leafs, according to @eduhatschek, gave up "mid-level compensation for a mid-level player,” in trading for Ilya Lyubushkin. But was even that too much? Our trade grades: https://t.co/JKPnoGbFGT
At 75 percent retained, Lyubushkin's cap hit to Toronto would be $687,500, which is $87,500 less than the NHL minimum salary.

Lyubushkin will go to TOR with 75 per cent retained. Ducks get a 3rd, Hurricanes get a 6th
Lyubushkin makes $2.75M against the cap. With double retention, his cap hit would be less than a league minimum salary and give the Leafs more flexibility to continue to add by the deadline. https://t.co/6RqWRU29pK
Ilya Lyubushkin is not on the ice for warmups for #FlyTogether. Sounds like a trade is in progress. @TheHockeyNews
Anaheim has pulled Ilya Lyubushkin from lineup tonight. Ducks and Maple Leafs have been involved in discussions, we will see where it goes.
Ilya Lyubushkin pulled from Ducks lineup tonight as Anaheim involved in trade talks. Hearing the Maple Leafs one of teams in those talks with Ducks.

Here's a breakdown of why the #NJDevils helped facilitate the Chris Tanev trade and why they're "open for business" ahead of March 8. Happy trade deadline, folks! https://t.co/pKThXNB1qt
It's a bit confusing and there is definitely some irony but the #NJDevils have agreed to take on $1.125 Mil of Tanev's salary this season and trade the rights to G Cole Brady for Dallas' 4th round pick. This vindicated @JamesNicholsNHL 's prediction NJD would land Tanev https://t.co/NN4qjHFzTw
Potentially an important takeaway for the #Avs on the Tanev deal … the Devils paid $1.25 million in cap space for a 4th-round pick. Given Colorado’s lack of financial flexibility, doing a deal involving a third party like that might be helpful, or even necessary.
Devils pick up a 2026 fourth-round pick for retaining 50 percent of Tanev’s cap hit. https://t.co/2IoaUCoAsM
Smart move by #njdevils to get in the mix and retain on Tanev. They've got lots of LTIR space, more than they'll need, and it's use-or-lose. They now have extra 4th round pick capital they could potentially throw into the mix over the next 8 days - or keep it for themselves.
Flames are retaining 50 percent on Tanev cap hit and salary
