Representatives Rashida Tlaib and Jamaal Bowman have introduced the Living Wage for Musicians Act to Congress, aiming to increase streaming royalties for artists. The bill proposes setting a minimum royalty payment at 1 cent per stream and establishing a new royalty fund to ensure musicians receive fair compensation. Tlaib emphasized, "It’s only right that the people who create the music we love get their fair share, so that they can thrive, not just survive." This legislative effort responds to the challenge that many musicians face, as highlighted by Tlaib, where over 800,000 streams per month are needed to earn the equivalent of a $15/hour job, a target seldom reached by the majority on platforms like Spotify. The bill also suggests additional subscription fees as a means to raise the necessary funds for higher royalties. The Union of Musicians and Allied Workers (UMAW) has shown support by organizing shows across the US in favor of the act.

It takes more than 800,000 streams per month to make the equivalent of a $15/hour job, and the vast majority of music artists on platforms like Spotify never get to that number. I introduced the Living Wage for Musicians Act to fight for the fair pay that musicians deserve. https://t.co/JuWekbPnc2

Detroit is a global music capital, and our artists have made their mark on our culture in countless ways. Streaming has upended the music industry, making it harder for artists to survive. The Living Wage for Musicians Act aims to give artists the economic justice they deserve. https://t.co/wxKGdWcP3p
It’s time for musicians to be paid fairly from streaming services for our labor, and see how that increase in pay reverberates. All creatives in the music ecosystem (engineers, filmmakers who work on music videos, touring band members, etc) benefit when artists are paid fairly 💪 https://t.co/e0cVntmwkg
