Hong Kong has issued its first typhoon signal of the year as a tropical depression in the South China Sea intensifies. The Hong Kong Observatory raised the Standby Signal Number 1 at 5.40 pm on Thursday, followed by a T3 storm signal at 4.40 pm on Friday. The tropical depression, now named Tropical Storm Maliksi, has winds reaching 65 km/h and is expected to hit Guangdong tonight. China has activated a Level-IV emergency response in anticipation of the storm's landfall in the coastal areas of Guangdong. The storm developed despite N shear, and with La Nina on the way, more such storms are expected this year.
