Google has asked its Chinese supplier Goertek to build Pixel watches in Vietnam, a move that marks a significant shift in its supply chain strategy, according to Nikkei Asia. Previously, orders for the assembly of these devices were exclusively managed by Taiwanese companies. This development is part of a broader trend where Chinese tech suppliers are expanding their presence in Southeast Asia, challenging Taiwanese and other rivals who have traditionally dominated the region, including in countries like Vietnam and Thailand. Companies like BYDE and Luxshare are also seeking to displace established players like Foxconn by moving up the value chain from final assembly to managing factories and designing products. In the latest Apple top suppliers list, 37% of the 35 Apple suppliers in Vietnam are Chinese companies, highlighting the aggressive expansion of Chinese firms outside their home country.
As companies like Apple move parts of their supply chains out of China, Chinese firms like Luxshare and Goertek actually seem to be taking over more of the supply chain, particularly over Taiwanese suppliers.
