Defense chiefs from the U.S., Japan, Australia, and the Philippines have agreed to increase maritime military drills amid escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea. This year's Balikatan 2024 exercises, the largest to date, feature advanced weapon systems including HIMARS rocket launchers and Typhon systems capable of firing Tomahawk land attack missiles and SM-6 air defense missiles. Additionally, U.S. Marines conducted live fire exercises with HIMARS rockets on the coast of Barangay Campong Ulay in Rizal, Palawan. The exercises also included simulations to repel a mock foreign invasion in the Philippines' northern waters facing Taiwan, and amphibious invasion drills in Ilocos Norte, demonstrating a significant show of force and strengthening military ties in the region. China's presence was noted with a spy ship and four research vessels.
