Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree granting Russian citizenship to foreign nationals who join the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, including those who have signed contracts for at least one year of service in the Russian Armed Forces or 'military formations' during the war against Ukraine. The decree also extends the right to apply for Russian citizenship to Ukraine citizens born and permanently resided in Crimea or Sevastopol before March 18, 2014. Additionally, citizens of Ukraine, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, and Yemen are authorized to obtain Russian citizenship in a simplified procedure, without the requirement of knowledge of the Russian language, study of history, legislation, or prior conditions. The decree also allows for the fast-track granting of Russian citizenship to foreign mercenaries and their families who have signed a contract to serve in the Russian army. The measure applies to those who signed contracts during the ongoing 'Special military operation' in Ukraine.
