The EU Commission is poised to recommend Ukraine's membership bid to join the bloc as part of its 2023 Enlargement Package. Ukraine, having fulfilled four out of seven criteria for EU accession and implemented 90% of the necessary reforms, expects a positive assessment. However, Hungary's potential veto could complicate the opening of accession negotiations. The Commission's assessment is critical for gaining support from the bloc's 27 members. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that Ukraine has implemented 90% of the necessary reforms expected by the EU when granting candidate status. The Commission is also set to recommend opening accession talks with Moldova, granting candidate status to Georgia, and opening accession negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Ukraine's President Zelensky is eagerly awaiting the report. Ukraine initiated its bid to join the EU following Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022 and officially gained candidate status last June.
