In Spain, the openVertebrate project, supported by 16 grants from the National Science Foundation, has achieved a significant milestone by CT scanning over 13,000 museum specimens from more than half of all the world's animal groups, including mammals, fishes, amphibians, and reptiles. This six-year effort has made thousands of 3D natural history specimens freely available online through OpenVertebrate, aiming to reduce the wastage of valuable scientific specimens often left unused in storage or destroyed. Additionally, this digital archive enhances scientific research and allows for virtual exploration of historical Egyptian sites, contributing to the preservation of biodiversity.
