Nations around the world will need to build or upgrade roughly 50 million miles of power lines by 2040 in order to meet their renewable energy goals, according to reports from the International Energy Agency (IEA) and a new climate report. The IEA estimates that $600 billion per year will need to be spent on transmission and distribution lines to move electricity from where it's produced to where it's used. This investment is equivalent to about 100 round trips to the moon from Earth. The capacity to connect and transmit electricity is not keeping pace with the rapid growth of clean energy technologies such as solar and wind power, electric cars, and heat pumps. The Biden administration has announced a $3.5 billion investment to bolster the US power grid and deploy clean energy, while the European Parliament has adopted a decision to establish a €50 billion fund for Ukraine's energy infrastructure. The G20 countries, including India, Brazil, and South Africa, are being called upon to play a significant role in supporting climate migrants and addressing the challenges of meeting growing energy demand and reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.
Stalled spending on electrical grids is slowing the rollout of renewable energy and could put efforts to limit climate change at risk if millions of miles of power lines are not added or refurbished, the International Energy Agency said. https://t.co/ikBdHgQd0F
