Republican congresswoman Nancy Mace, who was one of eight Republicans to vote to oust former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, wore a scarlet "A" on her shirt during a House GOP Speaker candidate forum. Mace stated that she wore the scarlet letter because she felt "demonized" for her vote and voice. She explained that she had a difficult week, particularly as a woman in Congress. Mace's decision to vote against McCarthy came after the redrawing of district lines in 2022. In response to Mace's criticism of Majority Leader Steve Scalise, fellow Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene called it a "disgusting attack."
