In the late 14th century, the Kingdom of Poland and the Kingdom of Hungary were ruled by two sisters, Jadwiga and Mary, who were both declared kings due to women not being considered able to rule as queens in medieval Central Eastern Europe. Jadwiga became a saint in 1997. Jadwiga of Poland married Jogaila, the Grand Duke of Lithuania, who converted to Catholicism and united his lands with Poland. The alliance of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania defeated the German Teutonic Order at the Battle of Grunwald in 1410, shifting the balance of power in Central and Eastern Europe. The victory at the Battle of Grunwald inspired resistance to the Germanization and Russification policies of the German and Russian Empires. The 1385 Union of Krewo between Poland and Lithuania fostered religious and cultural tolerance. Poland chose to form a coalition with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Europe's largest state and last pagan state at the time. Queen Jadwiga of Poland found a way to deal with the Teutonic Knights who were trying to dominate the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Jadwiga was crowned king of Poland at the age of 10 for reasons of legitimacy and to prevent her future husband from calling himself king. The decision fell on Lithuania in 1385 when Poland was at a crossroads. Queen Jadwiga married the Lithuanian pagan ruler Jogaila, and from then on, Poland and Lithuania's fates were bound together. The Battle of Grunwald in 1410 was one of the largest battles of medieval Europe, where Poland and Lithuania defeated the Teutonic Knights. The Union of Krewo in 1385 laid the foundation for the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which became the largest state in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. Lithuania, Europe's largest and last pagan state, converted to Catholicism and teamed up with Poland after marrying into the Polish royal family.
