The Pentagon is posthumously honoring Waverly B. Woodson, Jr., a Black combat medic who served during the D-Day invasion of France in World War II. Woodson, part of the only Black combat unit to participate in D-Day, is being posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the second highest valor award. Despite being wounded, Woodson saved dozens of lives on D-Day. This recognition comes 80 years after his heroic actions. Senator Chris Van Hollen has worked with Woodson's family for years to achieve this recognition. The announcement comes ahead of the 80th anniversary of D-Day this Thursday.
