Five years have passed since the Christchurch shooting, the largest mass shooting by an Australian, where 51 people were killed in New Zealand mosques. The anniversary is now recognized as the UN international day to combat Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred. The shooter's racist upbringing in Australia and fixation on Muslim immigration from a young age were highlighted in the Royal Commission's report.
Our Research Fellow, Luke Baumgartner (@asap_baumy), recently published an article on Irregular Warfare Initiative (@IrregWarfare) reflecting on the legacy of the Christchurch terrorist attacks five years later. Check it out! https://t.co/j6JbnqnGHq
An exceptional @IrregWarfare piece by U.S. Army veteran and @gwupoe research fellow @asap_baumy reflecting on the Christchurch terrorist attacks as we arrive at the five-year anniversary. https://t.co/8MSbTwd9bR
Five years ago today, a gunman killed 51 people at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, streaming the massacre live on Facebook. Then-Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced a ban on all military-style, semi-automatic weapons days later. https://t.co/7EPFf9Itii https://t.co/ZIv2pSuhxD

It was very moving to be at Al Noor mosque for a few hours this evening – five years on from the Christchurch Mosque Attacks. On March 15 we remember that the Muslim community have lost a great deal, but have also found the resilience and compassion to give so much. https://t.co/XIv4zd4sz7
It is the fifth anniversary of the Christchurch massacre. 51 people were murdered for going to practice their faith, at Friday prayers at two local mosques in New Zealand. The anniversary is now marked as the UN international day to combat Islamophobia & anti-Muslim hatred. RIP https://t.co/kdSQObcn65
"We just don’t remember this massacre that happened as an Australian thing." Five years on, there has been little reflection on the Islamophobia behind New Zealand's Christchurch mosque attacks. 🔗: https://t.co/5ym90Rl8w3 https://t.co/JHnUkpb1yg
there is literally a chapter in the Christchurch Attack Royal Commission's report called "The individual's upbringing in Australia" about how he was racist from a young age and started fixating on Muslim immigration at 12 years old — a belief that inspired the massacre https://t.co/CRqjg96mPN https://t.co/6nS38I3W5E
March 15, 2019, was a day when families, communitles and the country came together both in sorrow and solidarity. Five years on, we pay our respects to the 51 shuhada - the martyrs who were unjustly targeted for their beliefs, and to those who were injured. We also remember…
5 years today since the Christchurch shooting, the biggest mass shooting by an Australian. Whether it happened overseas or because we're unwilling to interrogate how our culture created someone capable of this, Australia rarely acknowledges the massacre. But it is our shame.
