New York City has the largest homeless population among American cities in 2023, with 88,025 individuals. A recent federally-mandated annual survey counted 4,140 people sleeping on NYC streets and subways, marking the highest number of unsheltered homeless people in more than a decade. Despite the influx of over 200,000 migrants seeking shelter, the number of people living on the streets has remained relatively flat. The shelter population remains high despite limited resources. Other cities with significant homeless populations include Los Angeles City and County with 71,320, Seattle/King County with 14,149, and San Diego City and County with 10,264.
