Chicago has seen a significant increase in homelessness, with more than 18,800 people lacking a permanent place to sleep on a single night in January. This marks a threefold increase over the previous year, largely driven by the arrival of 35,000 migrants between January 2023 and January 2024. Mayor Brandon Johnson has been addressing the crisis by opening new shelters, including one at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Portage Park. Approximately 50 asylum seekers have already moved into this shelter since May 20. However, the administration has also begun the process of removing migrant families from city shelters, including those with children attending Chicago Public Schools.
