The Coalition for the Future of College Athletics, consisting of 28 Division I conferences, has been formed to push Congress for a name, image, and likeness (NIL) mandate. The coalition aims to codify that athletes are not employees of universities. The NCAA is making changes to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) for 2024, which could impact the NCAA Tournament. NCAA senior VP of basketball, Dan Gavitt, expressed concerns about the viability of the NIT. The changes were not intended as a test run for expanding the NCAA tournament. The NCAA is facing multiple antitrust lawsuits that could result in billions of dollars in damages. The recent NIT changes have raised questions about the future of the College Football Playoff. The NCAA's handling of NIL and transfers has led to outside bodies intervening due to their antiquated amateurism rules.
This whole mess with NIL and transfers does still fall on the NCAA. They clung to their antiquated "amateurism" for so long that an outside body (congress, Supreme Court) had to say "hey, uh, you can't do that," and that led to a free for all with no regulation

No one wants to hear the truth about the NIT, because changes to its format represented one more big opportunity to take a brick to how the @NCAA operates. But no one's coming after the "little guy." Spare me. https://t.co/MH6zzYf0lx

Dan Gavitt said that the NIT changes were not done as a test run and precursor to NCAA tourney changes to expand add more high-major teams.
Dan Gavitt adds they will look at the NIT qualifications and selection process again after the media rights agreement, and there could be changes again to how the teams are chosen. Basically what he's saying is that these changes were a financial decision from the NCAA.
