Dusty Baker, the manager of the Houston Astros, has announced his retirement after a 26-year managerial career. Baker, who is currently in 7th place on the all-time wins leaderboard, made the decision two days after the Astros lost to the Texas Rangers in Game 7 of the AL Championship Series. The 73-year-old Baker expressed gratitude to Astros owner Jim Crane and mentioned that he hasn't decided what he will do next. Baker's retirement comes after a successful career that included three pennants, three Manager of the Year awards, and a World Series championship in 2022.
One thing I loved at Dusty's retirement press conference was when he was asked a question about the media...When he responded, he looked some of the people he was talking about in their eyes, and they turned their heads. #Sarge

We live in a country so dominated by systemic racism that Dusty Baker, a black man born in 1949, can accidentally become a huge success because, according to his own narrative, he was constantly given the opportunity by others to do glamorous jobs he didn’t even really want… 🤔 https://t.co/2umhFALgyX

I've been thinking a lot about Dusty Baker now that he's retiring. My mind took me to the Steve Bartman game, when the #cubs were a few outs away from their first pennant in 58 years before the fan took that foul ball away from Moises Alou. Cubs still could've won Game 7....
Sad to see Dusty retire (the whole no headline link thing made this seem like an obit). https://t.co/XmQigcOs0k

As a kid, Johnnie B. Baker Jr. was nicknamed 'Dusty' because of how often he played in the dirt. Since, he's embarked on an 18-year MLB career, a nearly 30-year managerial career and, at age 73, a World Series run. Now, Baker tells USA Today he'll finally retire from baseball. https://t.co/glC8lNrWWl

I've been critical about Dusty Baker's moves and his suitability for the Astros this far removed from the scandal, but don't get me wrong: I love the guy, he's had an amazing career, and he's going to be a deserving HoF inductee pretty quickly.

So now Dusty Baker and Terry Francona could well end up on the same Hall of Fame ballot in a few years.
