A survey published on Wednesday revealed that an overwhelming majority of U.S.-based Middle East scholars have felt a growing need to practice self-censorship since the Israel-Hamas war began. Seventy-two percent of these scholars reported a greater 'direct or indirect need to self-censor' since the massacre perpetrated by Hamas. The survey found that most US-based Middle East scholars are self-censoring speech critical of Israel, with 81 percent withholding their criticism of Israel and 11 percent withholding their criticism of Palestinians. The survey also indicated that a group of Arabs from the Middle East and North Africa were deeply disturbed after viewing 47 minutes of Hamas’s October 7 atrocities during a screening at the Israeli consulate in Boston, Massachusetts.
