Last weekend, twenty masked men abducted Mohammed Mushtaha, a respected imam at Dhu ‘l-Nurayn mosque in Shuja’iyah, Gaza, after he refused to comply with Hamas' demands. His son, Ala, reported that his father was kidnapped for his refusal to 'brainwash people with their politics' and promote 'violent resistance and obedience to Hamas.' Despite understanding the fatal risks, Mohammed declined to be a 'megaphone for Hamas.' In his last request, he urged his family to reveal the 'despicable demands' made by Hamas, even if it led to his death, and to not allow Hamas to falsely attribute his potential killing to the Israeli army. Ala hopes that by making this story public, it might protect his father and possibly lead to his release, while also reflecting a sentiment among Palestinians in Gaza who wish for Hamas to be gone.
