The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague has concluded its public hearings on the last day of arguments regarding the legal consequences of Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem. The proceedings, which reached their 6th day, focused on the legality of Israel's occupation, its annexation of parts of the land, and the expansion of settlements that hinder the establishment of a Palestinian state. Following the conclusion of arguments and public hearings, the ICJ has now commenced deliberations. Israel has submitted a report to the ICJ detailing measures taken to comply with an interim ruling related to preventing actions in the Gaza war that could amount to genocide, with the IDF reaffirming its commitment to abide by international legal requirements. The case, brought forward by South Africa, has seen oral statements from dozens of countries and three international organizations, and has led to the ICJ ordering Israel to take urgent measures to prevent genocidal acts in Gaza and to respect the Genocide Convention. A ruling from the ICJ is anticipated later this year or next year.
