The State Bank of India (SBI) has approached the Supreme Court seeking an extension of time until June 30, 2024, to disclose the details of 22,217 electoral bonds encashed by political parties. This request comes as the current deadline set by the Supreme Court is March 6, 2024. The Supreme Court had previously banned electoral bonds on February 15, 2024, and ordered SBI to make public the names of the electoral donors. Criticism has emerged from various quarters, including Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate and senior advocate Prashant Bhushan, highlighting the bank's delay in disclosing the information as malafide. Additionally, the Indian National Congress, with Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal and other members, has questioned why SBI needs five months to furnish details of just 22,217 electoral bonds. Amidst this controversy, a contempt petition has been filed by an NGO in the Supreme Court against SBI's move to seek an extension for disclosing these details. Furthermore, Congress workers have protested in Patna against the delay in the disclosure of names of electoral bonds donors.
