India is set to prosecute 35 Somali pirates who were captured by the Indian Navy's INS Kolkata on a hijacked ship off the coast of Somalia on 16th March. The pirates, involved in the hijacking of a ship back in December, were brought to India to face trial. This development comes amid a reported rise in piracy, although the Indian Navy Chief has stated that no Indian-flagged vessel has been targeted by Houthis. The Navy Chief also highlighted the volatile situation in the Red Sea but credited the new Maritime Anti Piracy Act for the successful capture and prosecution of the pirates. Additionally, Somali pirates have demanded a ransom of $5 million (around 42 crore INR) for the release of the crew onboard a hijacked Bangladesh-flagged bulk carrier.
