The Indian Cabinet has approved a series of initiatives to advance coal gasification, including the establishment of joint ventures and a robust financial incentive scheme. A joint venture between Coal India Limited (CIL) and Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) will focus on synthetic gas production in the ECL command area, while a partnership between CIL and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) will produce ammonium nitrate from coal in the MCL command area. The Cabinet also sanctioned a scheme to promote Coal/Lignite Gasification Projects for Government PSUs and the Private Sector, which features an incentive of $1.02 billion for coal gasification projects. Viability gap funding of Rs 8,500 crore, approved under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government, will support these initiatives. Two coal gasification plants are planned for West Bengal and Odisha, aiming for 100 metric tons of coal gasification by 2028-29.
