India has signed a free trade agreement with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries, including Switzerland, aimed at enhancing economic cooperation and boosting trade and investment. External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar met with Iceland's Foreign Minister Bjarni Benediktsson on the sidelines of the India-EFTA meeting to discuss new areas of collaboration, investment, and trade. The agreement is expected to lower prices for Swiss watches and chocolates in the Indian market and includes tariff cuts on various products. Norway's Minister for Trade and Industry, Jan Christian Vestre, highlighted the respect for India's agricultural policies and announced a commitment to promote investments and job creation with a $100 million investment. The pact could potentially create 1 million jobs in India over 15 years. Additionally, discussions on India-Iceland collaboration in geothermal energy projects in Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh, as well as the prospects for direct air connectivity between Iceland and India, were undertaken. Furthermore, Sergei Aleinik, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, is visiting India to engage in discussions on bilateral, regional, and global issues to further the India-Belarus partnership. Norway has investments of $25bn in India, expected to grow in the coming years.
