In preparation for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission of India has undertaken several significant measures to ensure a fair and secure electoral process. Special observers have been appointed in various states to maintain a level playing field. These observers, including General and Police Observers, have been deployed in states with populations exceeding 7 crore, such as West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Bihar. Additionally, the Commission has ordered the transfer of 3 Collectors and 6 IPS officers in Andhra Pradesh, and 8 Bureaucrats and 12 Police Superintendents across 5 States, including Bihar's Bhojpur and Nawada districts, to bolster administrative, security, and expenditure monitoring. Over 55 lakh Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are set to be deployed for the elections, described as the world's largest electoral movement. Furthermore, in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur Lok Sabha seat, over 16.23 lakh voters will decide among 12 candidates in the first phase of the elections on 19th April, with 2637 polling stations established for voter accessibility. The Election Commission also plans to meet with officials from states, union territories, and central agencies to assess security along borders and review the law and order situation, aiming to prevent illicit activities and ensure strict vigilance across inter-state and international borders.
