The Tiwai Point aluminium smelter in New Zealand has secured its long-term future through new 20-year power deals with local generators. Rio Tinto, the operator of the smelter, has committed to keeping the facility operational until at least 2044. The agreements ensure the smelter, which produces around 330,000 tonnes of low-carbon metal annually, will meet its full electricity needs starting in July. Additionally, Rio Tinto has signed a deal to become the sole owner of New Zealand Aluminium Smelters. The smelter is New Zealand’s biggest energy user.
