A recent study by The Wall Street Journal and Northeastern University professor Laura Edelson has revealed that Instagram is recommending sexually explicit content to users as young as 13 years old. The tests, conducted over seven months and ending in June, showed that new accounts set to age 13 were exposed to adult-oriented content within minutes. In one instance, within the first 45 minutes, Instagram began showing videos about anal sex to a fictional 13-year-old account. Despite Meta Platforms' promise in January to provide an 'age-appropriate' experience for teens, the social media platform has continued to push sexual videos to minors. Meta has responded by stating that the tests do not reflect the reality of how teens use Instagram. The study also noted that similar platforms like Snapchat and TikTok did not produce the same sexualized content for young users.
