A U.S. judge in North Carolina has denied the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) request to block Novant Health's $320 million acquisition of two hospitals in the state from Community Health Systems (CHS). The FTC argued that the deal would lead to higher prices and reduced innovative care. The ruling allows Novant Health to proceed with its acquisition while the FTC conducts an in-house review. Judge Kenneth Bell, in his order, stated that the proposed merger 'carries at least as much likelihood of competitive benefits as it does competitive harm.' The FTC's request for an injunction was initially made in January.
