A proposal by Lee Ohanian and James A. Schmitz in The Washington Post suggests that eliminating five words from a 1974 housing regulation could significantly increase housing affordability. The regulation currently requires manufactured homes to be permanently attached to their chassis, which has prevented these lower-cost homes from being available in many neighborhoods (NBHDs). By removing this requirement, the cost of manufactured homes could be reduced by 50%, making them a viable option for many families. The proposal, discussed in an op-ed, aims to leverage the benefits of modern mass-produced housing to address the housing affordability crisis. The Hoover Institution has also highlighted this potential reform.
"Amending the law ā by eliminating five crucial words ā would provide an important first step in bringing back this once-popular housing alternative." From @lee_ohanian and James A. Schmitz: https://t.co/7EV2mvGJZx
Someone at The Washington Post literally proposed this solution to unaffordable housing: Get everyone into mobile homes by stripping them down and calling them something else ššš https://t.co/aM3SRsRkjI
ICYMI, eliminating just 5 words from a 1974 housing regulation could increase housing affordability enormously by leveraging the benefits of modern mass-produced housing. @HooverInst https://t.co/A1UpcmsaRi
Want affordable housing? Cut these five words out of this existing law, @lee_ohanian and James A. Schmitz write: https://t.co/qMsRAHIKnU
A reform that could do a lot to improve the housing situation is America is that if there is a residentially zoned parcel of land that you own and you want to build one or more residences on the land and the structure you are proposing is safe, you should be allowed to build it.

To increase home affordability, remove regulation that mfg homes must be permanently attached to their chassis. Reg has kept mfg homes out of many NBHDs. With 50% lower cost, this would be game-changer for many families. My Op-Ed in WaPo: https://t.co/NltLBctXwq @HooverInst
