May 25th marks the fourth anniversary of the death of George Floyd, who was murdered by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. His death, which occurred over 8 minutes and 46 seconds, sparked a global movement against systemic racism and police brutality. To honor his memory and address ongoing issues of police violence, several members of Congress, including Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, and others, have reintroduced the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2024. This legislation aims to enhance public safety by improving police training, restricting unsafe policing practices, and increasing transparency and accountability within law enforcement. The bill has garnered widespread support from Democratic lawmakers, including The Black Caucus, who are calling for its passage to bring about meaningful reforms in policing and ensure justice for victims of police brutality. The act, which has previously passed the Democratic House twice but failed in the Senate due to opposition to ending qualified immunity, also forms the basis for President Biden’s executive order on policing reforms.
