The Charlotte area and surrounding regions are preparing for two significant storm systems, with the first expected on Saturday, which has been designated as a First Alert Weather Day. Conditions are anticipated to be cloudy, wet, and cold with heavy downpours at times, leading to localized flocking and run totals of no more than 1 inch. A wintry mix in the mountains and a windy and wet start to the day are expected. The best chance for rain is Saturday morning to mid-afternoon, with accumulating snow in the mountains as suggested by GFS output. A Weather Authority Alert Day has been issued due to the incoming winter storm. Precipitation will begin predawn with sleet and freezing rain in the foothills and snow in the mountains, eventually changing to rain during the morning. The rain is expected to exit early Saturday, with totals around 0.6"-1". Looking ahead to Tuesday, wind gusts of 40-50+ mph are forecasted, and there is a potential for strong or severe thunderstorms. The day could bring gusty winds and thunderstorms, with isolated strong or severe t-storms possible. The GFS model is showing significant wind gusts, and heavy rain is possible early Sunday morning. The weekend starts wet but will likely clear by 8-9am, leading to a breezy and mild afternoon with highs in the low 70s on Saturday and seasonal highs near 60 on Sunday. Savannah has recorded a rain total of 0.88”. Severe weather is possible on Tuesday across southeast Georgia and the Lowcountry, with heavy downpours, localized flooding, and gusty winds being the main threats, and there is a tornado risk southeast of Charlotte. Forecast peak wind gusts indicate the potential for strong tornadoes. The risk of severe thunderstorms across North Carolina on Tuesday is high, with tornadoes a particular risk in the south and east of the state. The threat level has increased farther east, including north Florida, coastal Georgia, and the coastal Carolinas. A major storm system late Tuesday into Wednesday will bring the potential for flooding rainfall, strong to damaging winds, moderate to major coastal flooding, and major shoreline impacts. An elevated risk for severe storms is expected Tuesday afternoon, with a line of intense storms moving quickly through, capable of gusts over 60 mph and isolated tornadoes. Some areas may experience surge and coastal flooding in low-lying areas that typically flood. The system is likely to be a high-impact weather event, with the potential for a strong tornado. Gusty winds, heavy downpours, and isolated tornadoes are possible, with the timing of thunderstorms favoring the afternoon hours. Severe thunderstorms are expected ahead of a cold front, and a Wind Advisory and High Wind Warning are in place for Tuesday, with gusts of 50+ mph possible within the line of storms. Gusty winds will pick up out of the south, with Wind Advisories in effect from 10 AM to 7 PM, and gusts up to 40-50 mph are possible. Overnight, there is a significant wind and tornado threat along the northern Gulf Coast, with a squall line capable of intense severe weather preceded by a broad batch of supercells lifting north out of the Gulf of Mexico. The tornado threat is expected to last much of the night for southern Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.
