25 years ago today, on May 3, 1999, one of America's deadliest and most infamous tornadoes, rated F5, devastated parts of the Oklahoma City (OKC) metro area. Another F4 tornado hit the south side of Wichita (Haysville). The tornado outbreak persisted for 1 hour and 22 minutes, leaving a 37-mile trail of destruction from Amber to Midwest City with F5 damage in rural OK and OKC metro. The tornado impacted multiple communities across Central Oklahoma, especially Bridge Creek and Moore, with radar detecting wind speeds of 321+ mph. The tornado was considered one of the strongest in recorded history, with similarities to the El Reno EF3 and Piedmont EF5 tornadoes.
