Stellantis and Mercedes-Benz have halted the construction of their battery factories in Germany and Italy due to slowing electric vehicle (EV) sales and high costs. Stellantis-backed Automotive Cells Company (ACC) has also paused plans for these plants. In response to the competitive pressure from Chinese automakers and the high costs of electrification, Stellantis is considering dropping some of its suppliers to produce car parts in-house. This shift aims to lower costs and adapt to the expensive transition to electrification. Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares emphasized the need to compete at the cost levels of Chinese automakers if they are invited to Europe. Additionally, European battery makers have delayed 96 GWh of planned cell capacity beyond the 2030 pipeline, and there is consideration to switch to LFP cells.
