The Indian government has approved the establishment of three semiconductor units, marking a significant step towards technological self-reliance and positioning India as a key player in the global semiconductor manufacturing sector. The approval includes India's first major chipmaking facility to be set up in Dholera, Gujarat, by Tata Electronics Pvt. Ltd. in partnership with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp, Taiwan. Additionally, a semiconductor unit will be established in Assam, the first for the Northeast, and another unit in Sanand, Gujarat. These units, part of the 'Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystems in India', represent an investment of Rs 1.26 lakh crore ($15.2 billion) and aim to generate 20,000 direct jobs. The construction of these units is expected to start within the next 100 days, with the Dholera facility planning to produce 50,000 wafers per month and 300 crore chips annually, and the Assam unit to manufacture 48 million chips per day. The total investment includes 91,000 crore in FAB and 27,000 crore in other projects.
