China's largest LNG carrier construction project has delivered the first LNG carrier of a six-vessel fleet in Shanghai. Each vessel in the fleet can carry 174,000 cubic meters of LNG, collectively importing 3.5 million tons of LNG annually to meet the three-year demand of 9 million households. This expansion is part of China's broader strategy to increase its LNG imports, which could hit record levels in 2024, according to a PetroChina official. China National Offshore Oil, the state-owned oil and gas giant, is also expanding its fleet of LNG carriers to enhance its trading power in the global market.
