In 2023, China expanded its high-speed rail (HSR) network by 2,776 kilometers, matching the entire length of Japan's HSR system. This expansion brings China's total HSR length to 45,000 kilometers, approximately two-thirds of the global total. The country aims to extend its network to 70,000 kilometers by 2035. Additionally, a new high-speed train capable of reaching speeds of 450 km/h is set to reduce the travel time between Shanghai and Beijing to just 2.5 hours, half the current duration, and is expected to be operational by 2025.
