Recent discussions and events have highlighted the growing concern over the impact of threats and intimidation on the UK's parliamentary democracy. Elected representatives are facing an increasing sense of threat from various sources, including Islamist terrorism and angry mobs gathered outside, which is having a corrosive effect on democratic processes. Instances of chaos in the House of Commons, with politicians being intimidated into submission and facing threats of murder by mobs of extremists, have underscored the urgency of addressing these issues to protect democratic freedoms and ensure that political differences do not undermine the functioning of democracy. Especially concerning is the safety of MPs, particularly female MPs, who feel scared in their homes or threatened for how they vote.
Chaos in House of Commons last night wasn't the only evidence we need a better politics. For MPs to feel scared in their homes or threatened for how they vote is unacceptable. Political differences can be strongly felt but mustn't be allowed to damage or undermine our democracy
A lot of justifiable anger at the fiasco in parliament. And, we also mustn’t ignore the discussion about the threats & intimidation that MPs, particularly female, face. No matter how much you dislike/hate an MP or “want peace”, making them fear for their safety is unacceptable
If it emerges Parliamentary chaos was caused by MPs' fear of a flood of threats of murder by mobs of extremists, then democracy is in peril; it doesnt just concern a faraway war; such pressure can be applied on issues closer to home; MPs & democratic freedoms must be protected now
When we have politicians being threatened by islamists and intimidated into submission, might I suggest that cowering to the bullies is never a sensible thing for a democracy to do? Worrying times ahead for Britain.
This is the essential point: our parliament cannot stand by and allow its proceedings to be influenced by a sense of threat posed to elected representatives from an angry mob gathered outside. Liberal democracy fails if this is tolerated https://t.co/CREmgBwTuB
The ever-present threat of Islamist terrorism is having an extremely corrosive effect on our democracy. MPs constantly wondering if they'll be next unless they toe the line. https://t.co/Dxwir9xJNt
