A new study reveals that intense heatwaves are linked to a rise in premature and early-term births in the U.S. The study found that for every 1°C rise above normal temperatures, preterm and early-term birth rates increased by 1%. Over 25 years, 53 million births in the U.S. were affected by this phenomenon, with Black and Hispanic mothers and those in lower socioeconomic groups particularly at risk.

🚨 INTENSE HEATWAVES LINKED TO RISE IN PREMATURE BIRTHS Premature births increased by 2% and early-term births by 1% during heatwaves. Each 1°C rise above normal temperatures raised preterm and early-term birth rates by 1%. Over 25 years, 53 million births in the US were… https://t.co/07lkoPjJ87

“The researchers found that across all of the heatwave definitions, these temperatures were associated with 19 per cent higher odds, on average, of a child with asthma being admitted to hospital, compared with when there wasn’t a heatwave.” https://t.co/RKUbXCkF9Q
