The New South Wales (NSW) government has announced an extension of the operational life of the Eraring Power Station, Australia's largest coal-fired power plant, by two years. Originally scheduled to close in 2025, the power station will now remain open until 2027. This decision, announced by NSW Premier Chris Minns, is part of an agreement between Origin Energy and the NSW state government, driven by concerns that renewable energy sources are not being added quickly enough to meet demand. NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey stated that the agreement 'gets the balance right.' The Eraring Power Station, located in Lake Macquarie, comprises four units with a total capacity of 2.9GW, supplying about a quarter of NSW's electricity demand.
