Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is pushing for committees to advance AI bills as advocates call for more aggressive action. The New Democrat Coalition has endorsed 10 bills aimed at maximizing the benefits and limiting the risks of AI. Among these is the CREATE AI Act, co-sponsored by Rep. Anna Eshoo and Rep. Don Beyer. Another endorsed bill is the Privacy Enhancing Technology Research Act, introduced by Rep. Haley Stevens, which aims to protect Americans' information in AI data sets. During a Wednesday hearing focused on how AI can be used to secure and defend the U.S., lawmakers acknowledged a new format may help them get their arms around a deeply complex set of issues. Lawmakers are exploring new formats, such as town hall meetings and AI 'insight forums,' to better understand the complexities of AI technology.
In today's #ThreatStatus newsletter: The House Homeland Security Committee may host town hall meetings for lawmakers on AI and could bring in tech experts to help lawmakers better understand rapidly evolving technology before writing rules to govern it. https://t.co/5Nf6jPQDOO
The town hall format would be familiar to tech experts who frequently field requests from Capitol Hill. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer convened AI “insight forums” starting last year. https://t.co/iiOSr37jmK
Today, the @NewDemCoalition's AI Working Group endorsed my bill, the Privacy Enhancing Technology Research Act which will keep Americans’ info safe in AI data sets. I'll continue fighting to ensure the safe and responsible deployment and development of AI.
