X Restores Reuters Account in India After Government Rejects Block Order

Users in India were unable to view Reuters’ main X accounts late on 5 July after the platform displayed a notice saying the @Reuters and @ReutersWorld handles had been “withheld in IN in response to a legal demand.” The block affected an account followed by roughly 25 million people, while more than 30 secondary Reuters feeds, including @ReutersAsia and @ReutersTechNews, remained accessible.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said it had issued no order to restrict the news agency and was “continuously working with X to resolve the problem.” Reuters confirmed it was in talks with the Elon Musk-owned service to regain access. The incident came amid heightened scrutiny of X’s compliance practices: in May, during counter-terrorism “Operation Sindoor,” Indian authorities had asked the platform to take down about 8,000 accounts, a list that reportedly included Reuters as well as media outlets TRT World and China’s Global Times.

By the evening of 6 July, the Press Trust of India reported that X had restored the Reuters accounts following government intervention. The brief disruption has renewed questions over the transparency of takedown requests and the safeguards for press freedom on large social-media platforms operating in India.
