Victor Ponta, a former Romanian Prime Minister and current deputy, has officially filed his candidacy for the upcoming presidential elections in May 2025 as an independent candidate. Ponta, who was previously a member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), announced his intention to run, expressing his desire to see if he would be allowed to compete. He cited concerns about the system blocking candidates it does not favor, specifically mentioning the exclusion of other candidates like Crin Antonescu. Following his announcement, Marcel Ciolacu, the Prime Minister and President of PSD, proposed Ponta's expulsion from the party. This proposal was put to a vote in the National Political Council (CPN) of PSD, where it was decided to exclude Ponta from the party. The decision was nearly unanimous, with only one vote against it from Radu Moldovan. Ponta had been suspended from PSD prior to his candidacy announcement.
