U.S. stocks rose on Wednesday after former President Donald Trump unveiled a trade agreement with Vietnam, sending the S&P 500 up 0.47% to a record 6,227.42 and the Nasdaq Composite 0.94% higher to an all-time high of 20,393.13. The technology-heavy rally, led by Nvidia, Apple and Tesla, offset a 0.02% dip in the Dow Jones Industrial Average to 44,484.42. Nike climbed about 4% on expectations the deal will ease supply-chain risks tied to its large manufacturing base in Vietnam.
Under the accord, Washington set a 20% tariff on most Vietnamese exports and a 40% levy on goods routed through third countries, while granting U.S. products duty-free access to Vietnam. Hanoi is preparing to confirm an $8 billion purchase of 50 Boeing aircraft and $2.9 billion in U.S. agricultural imports, according to people familiar with the talks. The market’s optimism outweighed data showing U.S. private payrolls fell by 33,000 in June, the first decline in more than two years, as investors looked ahead to Thursday’s non-farm payrolls report for clues on Federal Reserve policy.
