The UK House of Commons on 2 July voted 385–26 to add Palestine Action to the list of terrorist organisations under the Terrorism Act 2000. If the measure becomes law, membership of, or public support for, the direct-action group will be a criminal offence carrying a sentence of up to 14 years.
The draft proscription order, brought forward by Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, now goes to the House of Lords on Thursday and would come into force at midnight on 9 July if approved. The same statutory instrument also designates the neo-Nazi Maniacs Murder Cult and the Russian Imperial Movement.
Ministers said the decision follows a 20 June incident in which Palestine Action activists breached RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire and sprayed red paint on two Royal Air Force aircraft. Security Minister Dan Jarvis told MPs the vandalism was the latest example of the group’s "long history of unacceptable criminal damage" against defence and other targets.
Palestine Action has initiated legal proceedings to block the ban, arguing it would violate rights to protest and free expression. The High Court has granted the group an urgent hearing on Friday to consider interim relief that could suspend the proscription while a full judicial review is prepared.
