Trump Welcomes Freed Hostage Edan Alexander to White House

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcomed Edan Alexander to the Oval Office on Thursday, marking their first in-person meeting since the 21-year-old dual U.S.–Israeli citizen was freed from Hamas captivity in May. The White House said the encounter lasted about half an hour and included Alexander’s parents and siblings.

Alexander, a native of Tenafly, New Jersey, was abducted on Oct. 7, 2023 while serving in the Israel Defense Forces and spent 584 days in Gaza tunnels before his release on May 12 in what officials described as a U.S.-brokered arrangement. He is believed to have been the last living American held by Hamas.

During the meeting, Trump said he had feared Alexander might have been killed in an airstrike, according to a person briefed on the discussion. Alexander thanked the president for helping secure his freedom and urged renewed efforts to obtain the release of roughly 50 hostages who remain in Gaza.

Thursday’s visit comes ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s scheduled White House talks on Monday as the administration presses both Israel and Hamas to finalize a broader cease-fire and hostage accord. Alexander is the ninth former captive to meet Trump at the White House this year.
