Trump's Envoy Steve Witkoff Seeks 3.67% Enrichment Limit in Iran Nuclear Talks Mediated by Oman

President Donald Trump's special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, has emphasized that any potential nuclear agreement with Iran will hinge on the verification of Iran's uranium enrichment and its military capabilities. Witkoff, who led the U.S. delegation in talks with Iran in Oman, stated that the discussions were positive and constructive, focusing primarily on ensuring Iran does not enrich uranium beyond 3.67%, a level set by the 2015 multilateral agreement from which Trump withdrew the U.S. in 2018. The talks, mediated by Oman, involved Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The discussions aim to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons while allowing it to maintain a civilian nuclear program. According to recent reports from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran currently holds about 274.8 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60%, a level significantly higher than the 3.67% needed for civilian purposes but below the 90% required for nuclear weapons. Witkoff stressed the importance of verifying Iran's missile stockpiles and bomb-related technology, including missiles and triggers, as crucial elements of any agreement. In addition to the discussions in Oman, there has been speculation about a potential visit by Witkoff to Tehran. Iranian parliament member Abulfazl Zohrevand suggested that such a visit could help align the mental calculations of Witkoff and Trump regarding Iran, potentially leading to more rational decision-making. However, no confirmation of such a visit has been reported.
