Trump Disappointed After Putin Rejects Ukraine Cease-Fire, Kremlin Plans New Talks

U.S. President Donald Trump said on 4 July that he was “very disappointed” by a telephone conversation the previous day with Russian President Vladimir Putin, noting that the Kremlin showed no sign of agreeing to a cease-fire in Ukraine. Trump told reporters he would later consult Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about the stalled effort to halt the conflict.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded that Moscow “pays very close attention” to all of Trump’s statements. According to Peskov, Putin informed Trump that Russia expects to agree on a date for a third round of negotiations with Kyiv and still aims to achieve its goals through political and diplomatic means, although the “special military operation” will continue in the meantime.
The call came hours after what Ukrainian officials described as one of Russia’s largest aerial barrages since the start of the war. The Ukrainian Air Force said more than 500 drones and missiles were launched overnight against Kyiv and other cities, wounding at least 23 people.
Trump’s remarks also follow his administration’s recent decision to suspend some weapons deliveries to Ukraine, a move that has raised concern about Kyiv’s air-defence capacity as the war extends into its fourth year.
