Thailand’s Constitutional Court on Tuesday suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra from office while it hears a case that could remove the 38-year-old leader for alleged breaches of ministerial ethics. The petition, filed by 36 senators, cites a leaked 15 June phone call in which she appeared overly deferential to Cambodia’s former prime minister and current Senate president Hun Sen during efforts to calm a border dispute.
All nine judges agreed to accept the complaint and, by a 7–2 margin, ordered Paetongtarn’s immediate suspension. She has 15 days to submit a written defence. Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit is serving as caretaker premier, ensuring continuity after King Maha Vajiralongkorn had only hours earlier endorsed a cabinet reshuffle initiated by Paetongtarn.
The leaked conversation followed a 28 May clash along the frontier that left a Cambodian soldier dead and provoked nationalist protests in Bangkok. Critics accused Paetongtarn of undermining Thai sovereignty by referring to Hun Sen as “uncle” and disparaging a Thai army commander. The controversy led the Bhumjaithai Party to quit the ruling coalition last week, leaving the government with a slim parliamentary majority.
Paetongtarn, who apologised and said her goal was to avoid further bloodshed, is the fourth member of the Shinawatra family to reach the premiership and the second Thai leader to be sidelined by the court in less than a year. Her father, billionaire ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra, appeared in a Bangkok court on royal-defamation charges moments after her suspension, underscoring the dynasty’s deepening legal woes.
